open source movement is powerful

Open Source Development Communities Proliferate Across, Within and Beyond Organisational Boundaries – A Requisite For The Future Of The Internet

The open source software movement is a force that should not be understated for it is a consortium and aggregate emergence of the wisdom of the crowds effect! I previously wrote about why the #Peer_To_Peer paradox is an actual solution to a multitude of problems that users face today! What is wrong with supporting developers here whom have relentlessly committed their time, life, opportunity costs on the very ethical and moral grounds to give back to the ecosystem – being the internet?

Quoting from my article, specifically, I alluded to what Warner Music was going through at the time, specifically:

#OpenSource

During a time of “enormous upheaval and transition” as proclaimed by the president and chief executive of Warner Music Australia Ed St John, the music industry, namely, is moving closer to embracing the internet as traditional revenue streams continue to dry up. The internet presents a “kaleidoscope of potential outcomes” for the big four of music business companies (Sony BMG, Universal Music, EMI and Warner Music) through alternate distribution channels underpinned by potentially innovative subscription, community or trusted campaigns.

This provides insight into the nature of the landscape in todays dynamic virtual landscape – a good summary of which can be found here where various forces, markets and transformative inputs take place!

Personally, I believe that these movements need to be supported through a broad framework that allows content producers whom are putting in the hard yards on the likes of Vimeo or Youtube to participate in the mashup culture – which is effectively the future of the internet – after all – one has to be a cross-pollinator sometimes opposed to a detractor – for detractors are whipsawing the state of flow in any system that is on the verge of breaking out – cross referencing the laws of Cybernetics! As with all models, some are good, some are not, but some are useful as a wise man once said.

So how do we battle this? This devils advocate is not a proponent of constructive criticism. They do not encourage critical thinking to foster team members tackling problems through the lens of innovation. The devils advocate seldom takes a ‘real stand’ and they tear down an idea with ‘clever criticism’. IDEO asserts that they “they often exhibit mean spirited negativity associated with that role”. They are the archetype destroyers of faith and will never allow you to reach your potential!

To battle against this devil, for starters, someone should immediately put forward insight from the front line; citing an inherent customer issue that is ongoing or radically transform a system/process that is causing much grief to internal stakeholders. You need to be a cross pollinator, as IDEO says, whereby you harness the reservoir of energy waiting to be tapped! Here, you don’t have to fit into traditional categories like Engineer, Marketer or Project Manager. New roles, like Chief Knowledge OfficerAugmented Intelligence AnalystDynamic Coordinator and other future role types are on the rise and these are surely the ones you will need to adopt in your frame of mind. In fact, you need to ‘draw associations and connections between seemingly unrelated ideas or concepts to break new ground’. This is an enabling process, as one then becomes effectively, a T shaped individual with breadth of knowledge in many fields BUT depth in one area of expertise!
